Oil income protects some states from pain of gas costs

Kansas City Star -- Tom Casey has spent nearly three decades working around Kansas oil and natural gas wells and has seen some rough economic times for the state’s energy industry.

Now isn’t one of them.

Casey, the manager of Express Well Service in Victoria, recently hired two workers, bringing it up to 40 employees. He also would hire a few truck drivers if he could find some. The company is using every piece of equipment it has, and there is plenty of overtime to go around.

“It’s the busiest it’s been in the last 10 years,” Casey said. “It’s pretty good.”

In 2011, the average prices for gasoline were the highest ever, and this year they are on track to set another record. The national average, according to AAA, is now $3.93 a gallon, and it’s expected to rise more.

I don't know about that in Canada.

We only pay a bit less than Ontario for we do not have the dreaded 8% provincial sales tax here. Otherwise we'd be the same as an oil rich province.
