Gasoline taxes rise to average 49.5c/gal across U.S.

GasBuddy Blog -- Average gasoline taxes continue to rise, being pushed higher by states who charge sales tax on gasoline purchases. For April, the American Petroleum Institute in its monthly motor fuel tax report, indicates the national average for gasoline tax rose to 49.5c/gal from 48.8c/gal in January.

Most areas across the country saw either no change or a rise in gasoline taxes while Connecticut was the only area that saw gasoline taxes fall, likely thanks to a cap on gasoline taxes that passed recently.

As we believe gasoline prices have already peaked, we may likely see gasoline taxes begin to gently fall as the wholesale cost of gasoline also drops. The U.S. national average today is just 4c/gal ahead of the same date last year...

What do you think happens when you keep building more freeways and people buy cars that use less gas and pay less road tax?

We should all get a portion of the profits for all the oil and natural resources we ship overseas. All the oil we drill goes on the open market to be shipped away, why should we not benefit from being stripped of our natural resources.

would be nice if the taxes would be used for what they are intended: infrastructure (building of new and maintenance of existing driving infrastructures). Too bad we will see more than the isolated bridge collapsing at the rate tax money is mis-appropriated in so many ways.

bkosher: b/c taxing authority by virtue of the constitution lies w/ the states (and the states can delegate that right to the counties).

Why can't there be a standard gasoline tax nationwide so that we start with an even start? If the taxes on gasoline were used for their intended purposes improving roads, etc. it might be easier to swallow. Why is it that every state, and sometimes different counties in the same state can have higher gas taxes than their neighboring states. It is time for the government to give the public a break and lower the taxes to a minimum level to decrease gas prices!! None of it makes much sense, but I'm sure they will rise again before summer travel begins.

now, how about using it for the intended purpose? For example, spend it on road and other infrastructures (such as bridges) construction / maintenance?

Its kind of odd. In North carolina there is a gas tax, therefore the gas is more expensive their by about 20 cents at the least. I live in SC. It has pretty cheap gas, cheap taxes, cheap living expenses, wonderful natural resources, and generally low living costs~! :) great state

Since taxes are based on a percentage, they will rise and fall with pricing.

At least with "big government profits" we may reap some benefit ( better infrastucture etc). What benefit will we reap from "big oil profits"?? I dont agree with either but what is the worse of two evils?

Note it is driven by sales taxes NOT user taxes for transportation infrastructure maintenance.

All a tax does is take earning power out of the consumer and lets the government decide how your money should be spent. They then do pork and ear marks
