ABS is actually for people who really have never learned how to drive, it is a dumbing down of safe braking practice. Remember how they told us to pump the brakes to keep them from staying locked up? Well, ABS is just pulses far faster than the human can pump. However, threshold braking, performed by somebody who has learned how to do it, will stop a car shorter than ABS will, in snow, on ice, in the rain, all those conditions ABS was made for. It is because people have not been taught proper braking techniques, and many do not have the temperament to apply threshold braking, that ABS became necessary, and does, indeed save lives. That being said, I would prefer to have ABS in many of the vehicles I may ride in driven by others. My niece for instance, complained bitterly about the first car she had with ABS, because nobody told her it would pulse every darn time she stepped on the brake. I tried to explain to her that I had driven many cars with ABS, and never had it trigger once, perhaps she should look at her braking technique. It didn't get through to her. She is the same person that got 4 WD in her next vehicle so she could drive faster in bad weather. I gave up trying to tell her she really, really, was not a driver, she was merely a barely adequate vehicle operator. [Edited by: rumbleseat at 10/1/2008 4:06:44 AM EST]

One vehicle of mine has ABS on the rear, I believe. My Corvette, early '84 does not. I've only had 3 small brake skids in over 350k of driving... (less than 5 feet!). I've driven competitively and have the car adjusted where I can feel the stopping/skid point. ABS doesn't give the driver good feedback. Now ARS... that's a different story.

If the manufacturers take away a proven safety feature. they may be asking for a lawsuit on the basis they didn't do all they could do to make a safer vehicle.
