Alex Salmond Hits Back at Donald Trump's Anti-Wind Farm Campaign

Oilprice.com -- A few months ago Donald Trump declared that he would take all possible action to prevent the Scottish government developing wind farms within sight of his £750 million golf resort in Aberdeenshire. He promised to spend as much as £10 million in fighting the plans, which he claims will prove “financial suicide” as it will destroy Scottish tourism. First Minister Alex Salmond has previously refused to be drawn into a war of words, but has just recently made his first jibe at the American tycoon in his address to the Scottish Trades Union Congress yesterday.

However Trump is not alone in his opposition to the wind farms. An anti-wind farm campaign has defended him, saying that he represents the views of many rural communities whom Mr. Salmond is ignoring.

Calling for all energy sources to be renewable by 2020 is not radical, as Trump's peeps would have you believe. It is the only logical step there is. The entire world should be doing the same.

I agree that solar is far preferable to wind, however that is based on the number of bird kills. Even if they went to bird-friendly Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines, it would not allow Scotland to remain picturesque. However, until solar is much more efficient, Scotland could not depend upon solar - it is too far north and has too few sunny days.

Maybe by 2020 solar will be there, and they could start replacing wind farms with solar rooftops on all buildings. Advances are coming.

The vast majority of the planet CAN and should depend upon solar. Just not big setups, small scale rooftop arrays will be the key to energy independent from carbon.

Wind energy is not worth it. The cost is not worth the output.

Wind energy RAISES the cost of energy for consumers. It does NOT lower it. The wind turbines are expensive to build and maintain, and they produce very little power in return. That is the biggest reason there are over 14,000 abandoned wind turbines in the USA.

Wind has become a green alternative source of energy in many places. Although the technology does pose a potential hazard to birds, if that problem could be solved then wind energy might significantly lower the cost of energy for consumers.

Trump has a point but it's not the scenery he's after -
wind farms are not cost effective on a massive scale

I hate to think that I would agree with The Donald on anything; however, my agreement in this instance is for a different reason. He does not want to see wind turbines from his golf course, a valid concern since industrial turbines are a serious visual pollutant of rural landscapes. I oppose wind ‘power’ in most locations because it is a snare and delusion. Wind turbines produce small amounts of low-grade, unreliable power that must be 100% backed up by conventional generation. They provide a tax windfall for their owners but offer little or no benefit to the users of electricity or the environment.

Wind is not cost effective at supplying massive amounts of power. They slay bats and birds.

Keep trying. Solve the problems or move on to something better.

I hate to bring this up now, but this article violates the news submission guideline rule #1: "News should be relevant to our members in the U.S. and Canada."

Aside from that, the Scottish population doesn't want the wind farm either as evidenced by those who have defended Trump. And for good reason since wind farms are expensive and provide little power in return for the investment. Do the research yourself, but there are over 1400 abandoned wind turbines in this country for those reasons.

It will be interesting to see if they ever build the wind farm off of Martha's Vineyard since the DemocRATS who live and vacation there don't want it.

How have the wind farms built in the USA fared? Not to good! They build them and then either can't afford to maintain them or the environmentalists drive you out of business due to bird kills. Doesn't seem economical in it's current stage of development.

Alternative energy is all fine and good but to convert all energy use in a short time span is a bit much.

i could care less about another country's efforts to "go green". but if it proves to be such an eyesore that we abandon the same "super-dee-duper" idea here off the coast of golf-haven, myrtle beach, south carolina... well then let's just see how that goes. and yes, the "barney" reference was totally on purpose. these days i think the entire body politic takes it's cues from kiddie tv programming

I don't think wind farms make sense from an economic stand point. They require sophisticated power distribution systems.

T Boone Pickens tried the wind farm and it did not make him money for the power needed. He went back to supporting natural gas. We have it lets use it.
