Colombian rebels kidnap five oil contractors

Reuters -- BOGOTA, March 20 - Colombian FARC guerrillas kidnapped five local oil contractors near a U.S.-operated oilfield, whisking them into a mountainous area close to Venezuela with troops in pursuit, officials said on Saturday.

The captive men were working for oil service companies Tuboscope and Tecnioriente, subcontracted by the local unit of U.S. company Occidental Petroleum (OXY.N), near the Caricare oilfield in Arauca state, a local army commander said.

A sixth worker managed to flee into bushes when rebels crashed their vehicle as army helicopters closed in on them.

Cute how speculators always get blamed or targeted in the replies. What a great scapegoat to always use!

Kidnapping has long been a problem in Colombia. Nobody is safe if they feel that a buck can be made.

I lived in Colombia back in the 70's and it wasn't too bad then. But it's really scary now.

Too bad US-operated oilfields weren't located in...oh, I don't know...say...the USA? If we would just open up exploration and harvesting of oil on our own soil, we could prevent quite a bit of the violence elsewhere as it would no longer be profitable for these rebels to disrupt a minor pipeline in a 3rd world country when the US supplies would be operating without issue.

Wrong. There are too many nutball SPECULATORS & OIL EXECS driving the prices up every effin' chance they get!!! THEY are the ones that will use ANY excuse that they can get their filthy paws on, no matter how ridiculous or insignificant it really is.

so the price will go up after the ransome is paid for the dead bodies. i can always drive less and a little bit slower from 55mph to 50mph to do my part to conserve and have a little more spending money in my pocket.

is occidental gas sold here? if so, they'll probably pay a ransom and pass the costs on to us. if not, who the heck cares - oil guerrillas are everywhere in the third world and it just a part of doing business.
lastly, USAFA82 had a very funny and ironical response - angry at gas prices - yep, so am i (but i ain't no guerrilla!!)

Danger lurks in the Columbian oil fields. The FARC isnn't doing so well getting drug money, so thay turn elsewhere.
