Compressed Natural Gas Vehicles: What Are They?

33 wytv News -- Drivers seem to be constantly looking for some relief at the pump. So much so, they turn to vehicles with alternative sources of energy, whether its hybrids or electric, the options are increasing.

Another option that could be on the horizon for the average consumer, Compressed Natural Gas or CNG vehicles.

"Sometimes when people hear natural gas vehicles, they say 'Oh I remember that technology. We tried that 20 years ago.'" said Stephe Yborra, NGV America (Natural Gas Vehicles for America). "And what we'll say to them is 'You probably had an eight track too.'"

Natural gas is making a strong comeback.

"The technology has moved about 3 or 4 generations since the technology that was out there in the mid 1990's up through the early 2000's." said Yborra

Idiots at WYTV News act like this is something new. Atlanta Gas and Light has been running its vehicles on CNG since they got rid of their horses! My Expedition is dual fuel, gasoline and CNG. The problem is Honda is the only big company making CNG vehicles and they only have one model and can't build them fast enough. The other problem is the EPA which has stupid rules on what vehicles can and can't be converted. My Expedition is not on the list, but the exact same engine that is in my vehicle is in the F-150, F-250, and Service Vans which are on the list. If a vehicle can run on gasoline, it can run on CNG, the EPA has absolutely no business saying which vehicles can and can't be converted especially since a CNG vehicle emits no emissions that the EPA regulates!

Most were Ford F-150 bi-fuels. They ran on CNG and then would switch to gas once the CNG tank was empty. Only way you could tell was that the fuel gauge would go from empty to full when it switched. I found them to work very good, just that the tank took up bed space. All our sweepers & buses ran on CNG. Most trash trucks where I live also run on CNG.

All we need is the stations. The gas companies have been running their fleets have been using CNG for years... Time for the rest of the country to get with the program.

If you are willing to do the CNG conversion to your vehicle yourself, the conversion and tank are not that bad, price-wise. What's expensive is the compressor. That will run nearly 4x the price of the conversion kit and tank. And then if you don't have piping and wiring experience, it'll cost you even more to have the compressor installed in your home. Obviously you have to have NatGas piped to your home. Point being, once these cheap compressors become available, if ever, then you'll see FAR FAR more adoption of CNG on existing vehicles being converted and new vehicles being sold as CNG. And with more CNG vehicles out there, more infrastructure will be justifiable.

There were already suitable alternatives to them. In contrast, there's still no alternative that seriously competes with gasoline.
