Fresno gasoline declines slowly, independent stations offer bigger savings

By Bethany Clough - The Fresno Bee -- Gasoline prices are dropping slowly everywhere in Fresno, but some stations were pulling in customers Monday with prices below $4.

Despite Fresno's average gas price of $4.22 a gallon, many independent stations were selling it as low as $3.97.

One of them with bargain prices was the Super 1 Food Store at Tulare and Seventh streets. And it had a steady stream of customers pulling in to get that price Monday.

"Everybody likes it," said owner Hardial Randhawa. "They come in and say 'thank you.' "

Independents undercutting their big-name brand competitors is a phenomenon that often happens when prices are on the way down, experts say.

The reason: Independents aren't locked into long-term fuel contracts like their big-name competitors. When prices are rising, those contracts help buffer...

there has been a minimal drop at SOME stations here. Some have gone on and offered 4 cents less. The nicer (to me) drop is the 6 cents in the diesel price at the truck stop.

Sure "everybody likes it" - who wouldn't. Everyone loves saving a buck or two or even a few cents. We'd rather have that in our pockets than the gas companies! And governments!

I have one independent station on my gas price route that is usually the first to drop prices and the first to raise prices too. A nearby major food and department store retailer offers 10 cents per gallon off with each $100 spent during the month, I usually go there to get gasoline instead. The local price per gallon is what gets my attention.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

With the price of a barrel of oil around $103, we should be paying less than $3.00 a gallon at the pump.

Wow, they're happy when it's under $4.00. $3.79, now $3.89, was making my grocery list get smaller to cover..

I think it's great that independent gas stations have lower prices. I think all stations should set their own prices regardless of what the competition down the road is doing.

'Fortunate' would be the correct word if the pump price were UNDER $2.00. Outside of that it is still GOUGE!

I guess we are fortunate in Austin, Texas, if you want to call high gas fortunate. Still, I filled up yesterday for $3.63.

As with everything shopping around in your area helps get the best price. Time of day matters too. Prices go down over the course of the day. Buying in the evening is usually cheaper.

Personally, I wish there were more independent gas station. It almost looks like a monopoly when the oil companies have refineries and gas stations. They control the price at every stage.
