GM sales rise 1.5 pct. on strong car performance

AP -- DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says its U.S. sales rose 1.5 percent last month as a big jump in car sales was offset by falling truck sales.

The company says new models boosted car sales by 29 percent. But sales of the Chevrolet Silverado, GM's top-selling vehicle, fell almost 17 percent from a year ago.

Still, GM says last month was its best September since 2008.

The company expects total U.S. auto sales to hit an annual rate of 14.5 million for September. That would make it the second-best month of the year.

GM sold more than 210,000 vehicles in September. It was led by the Chevrolet Cruze compact car with a 43 percent increase. Chevrolet Sonic subcompact sales were five times September of last year.

I notice that the big sellers are Cruze and Sonic cars. Traditionally, GM has just imported their compact and subcompact cars. Are these actually built (or at least assembled) here in the USA? I don't know because I didn't look it up, but that would be an issue for some of our posters.

Now lets hope GM doesn't do something stupid like they usually do - like trying to jack up their prices as soon as they see a few more people actually buying their products.

Look at the numbers. The federal government did NOT purchase 10,000 vehicles last month, let alone 40,000 units.

Here's the numbers for September:

- 210,245 General Motors

- 174,976 Ford

- 171,910 Toyota

- 140,041 Chrysler

-----

BOTH GENERAL MOTORS and FORD sold more vehicles than Toyota.

Toyota was THIRD in total unit sales for September. More shocking - CHRYSLER wasn't far behind Toyota.

Another 32,000 units - and the TOP-3 sellers in the U.S. would have been GENERAL MOTORS, FORD, and CHRYSLER...

I would say that's strong considering last year they sold a lot of cars because Honda and Toyota had limited availability. However, truck sales were down but expected to rebound when the new 2013 models are introduced.

Interest8ing that GM's sales jump was led by the Cruze and the Sonic while their Silverado truck sales fell off... maybe people are wising up about the cost of fuel?

They sold a lot of cars but did they make a profit? Big $ off sales in September and no margin in subcompact car anyway. Look out I smell Bail Out II coming; Can't let the UAW Brothers down.

Govt. Motors sales rose because Obumma used tax payers dollars to buy GM Cars and push up sales.Forst our money is stolen to bail out the UNION,and then it's stolen to buy GM vehiclesfor Govt. Use.

I don't think 1.5% is too strong. Chrysler was up double digits. I thought on ABC Radio news the other day I heard that GM sales were sluggish, only up about 0.5%?

Glad to see there's some improvement following the massive bail-out I (and all other taxpayers) funded.

I think GM should give an across the board, no strings rebate to everyone who paid any federal taxes in the past 4 years.
