The problem is that crude is worthless to consumers and industries unless they are refined into the specific products such as gasoline for cars, distillates for factories, jet fuel for planes. We only have refineries in certain parts of the country. This makes gasoline more expensive on both east and west coast. The oil companies have to supply gas stations from where it is cheapest to get from, and sometimes it is cheaper to import based on location.
Look at Canada, they have more crude than they can consume. Is gasoline the price cheaper in Canada?

polar: because we use IMport CRUDE and EXport DISTILLATES. We refine the oil we import. However, we do not have enough oil to satisfy 100% of our oil glut, which btw, has lots to do w/ all the wasting Americans do. Plastics, soaps and styrofoam are all produced from oil and fill up our garbage dumps and pollute our waterways.

lack of drilling oil in the US is not the problem why the prices are high. When Specutraitors were able to do futures trading offshore, away from US law, they were able to take off. Can't reach them there, so they can do as they please and THAT is the main source of fluctuations and high prices.

Actually kgbellman you should read as much as you can from media from both sides of the issue! That is called developing an 'informed opinion'! You can't weigh facts to develop a true assessment of any issue if Rush or HF is your only source of news and doing the thinking for you.
Think for yourself!

More drilling does Not help, its Big oil selling fuel and natural gas on the world market for higher prices, there will be NO price reduction for the cost of fuel or natural gas IN the US. Barry will support natural gas and oil production for sale on the world market to pay for his ‘spending gone wild’ addiction. The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! Speculators, manipulators and the banks continue to unfairly and unjustly make the driving public pay higher prices at the pump for their benefit. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle is, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

They will be talking this to death and nothing will change until the speculators find reason for the price of oil to be lower.

Long-term trend: progressive politicians are spending our dollars into toilet-paper, so it takes more of them to buy fuel, food, and everything else.
Medium-term trend: refineries soon will switch over to summer blend as we head into the summer driving season.
Short-term trend: Concern Iran will disrupt oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz.

Exactly correct suzmar - Huffington Post is a far-left rag. And I guess I'm dumb because I believe we CAN drill our way out of this as opposed to our BRILLIANT President who believes we can give all our hard-earned tax dollars away to hmmmmmm say Solyndra and recoup the money. Yeah - how'd that work out sir?

Obama can do things to lower gas prices quickly. He just doesn't want to do it because he's beholden to big money. Ban CIFs and force their unwinding with all cost paid by issuers by executive order (for all practical purposes, its economic terrorism). If they go bankrupt, then claw back the excessive bonuses, salary, options and other compensation since 1999 with interest from their principals.

Obama is correct and drilling at home does not make for cheaper fuel prices. Oil is sold at world prices wherever it comes from but over supply of gasoline at refineries should lower prices if the system would work as it should but greed and Wall Street control the system.

When will Obama see the light? He has already tried to release the reserves and that only worked for about a week. He needs to take oil futures out of the market. It is the speculators who keep driving up the price. Does he want a recovery or not? He has made a good statement about Iran, but will he back it up. Does he really want to win again or blow his chances by letting gas prices destroy any hope of recovery?
