Innovative ship design sees vessels become 30 percent more fuel efficient

EcoFriend -- One of the many product designs that could very well describe what future technology would be like is the Wind Challenger Project, a ship design said to reduce fuel consumption considerably, and particularly in huge merchant vessels. The project is being developed by a group comprising members from the University of Tokyo and by fusing old school concepts with modern technology.

The team’s idea is to use giant retractable sails measuring 20 meters wide and 50 meters high and maximizing wind energy. It has performed computer simulations for various shipping routes such as the Yokohama – Seattle route with results that proved to be encouraging. The simulations show that hybrid ships with engines and sails are believed to bring down annual fuel consumption by around 30 percent.

Sometimes the old fashioned way is just the technology we need!

BTW - we need to use ships more and trains more and trucks less and airplanes less to move things around. It just saves tons of fuel. Fuel saved is less cost and less pollution.

Do we really need everything the next day?

Just because we can does not mean we should.

Cool!

But.... Wouldn't it be cheaper to build the old-fashioned type of sailing ships to today's scale with an additional motor, kind of like in this article but using cheaper materials and building methods?

"that is SHIP design--I drive a CAR, not a ship. "

Well not everything is about you. Some have ships and they need gas, too.
Always good to hear as ships use A LOT of fuel. I've see the one's on hydrofoils that raise out of the water and go very fast while consuming much less gas. Get's be be like flying a boat. However I believe they need very clear seas to function. I could be wrong about that though.

Do you suppose that they'll soon discover that using an old fashioned rotary push mower will save fuel? ;)

Yes, and when there is no wind and they are out of fuel, the crew can use row boats to pull the ship. I have seen this in movies.

Great as long as it is done without taxpayer money. All innovations should come from the private sector. That way they will make economic sense.

Interesting idea but it would surprise me that you could get large sails large enough to provide much thrust as big and heavy as merchant vessels are now
