Pain in the tank: Gas prices highest since 2008

Associated Press -- Motorists are paying the highest prices for gas since October 2008. Retail gasoline prices rose on Thursday on an expected increase in demand and as more expensive spring and summer blends of gasoline make their way to the pumps.

The nationwide average hit $2.799 per gallon, a penny higher than Wednesday, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service.

Prices have now jumped 18.9 cents in the past month and are 87.9 cents higher than year-ago levels. Back on Oct. 23, 2008 prices averaged $2.8215 per gallon.

The Energy Department and many industry experts expect prices to top $3 this spring

As long as the price of gas keeps going up and up for the summer season, the more I begin to think about using alternative transportation when traveling to avoid driving the automobile.

Still way too low. The Europeans pay more than twice what we pay. Don't see many gas hogs over there and they have good public transportation everywhere.

Gas should be about $1.30 now. These current high prices will prevent the economy from rebounding any time soon.

We need an energy policy, not healthcare overhaul. No reason for these high prices.

Instead of predicting pricing, the Energy Dept. should be working to keep speculators from escalating prices.

Tomok, I think your glass is half empty. I prefer to think of mine as half full - I DO think we have kept prices from going higher by conserving and keeping an eye on the ball!

It does not help when big oil and the refiners are creating false shortages by producing less fuel and raising the fuel prices at the pump. Driving less, using less fuel has no affect and conservation does not work. Those speculators will keep fuel prices up - because they can. No comments from sneakies666 needed.

Oil prices and gas prices have been disconnected for a long time. Gas prices rise even oil prices fall. Free market economy in this country is a misguided myth.

it's only $82 per barrel for oil today. What will we be paying for gas when it gets back to $148 per barrel?? $2/liter in Canada or $7 per gallon in the USA???
