Q&A: Houston executive speaks for energy industry

Houston Chronicle -- BRETT CLANTON -- Becoming chairman of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, a Washington lobby representing more than 5,000 U.S. oil and gas producers, would be a big job at any time. Right now, however, it's huge. As producers exult in recent shale gas discoveries that could extend U.S. natural gas supplies for decades, they are facing policy and environmental challenges that could slow their momentum and cost jobs and investment, said Bruce Vincent, IPAA chairman since November and president of Houston-based Swift Energy Co. One meeting at a time, Vincent is focusing on giving policymakers a better understanding of the facts and what he calls the unintended consequences of certain policy moves.

The one thing he did not talk about was the impact on the water supply with the new drilling methods. Water is a limited commodity here in North America and if it is compromised by the oild industry it will impact you and I to survive.

Maybe if the oil industry lobbyists were to spend some time educating the American public about the industry, how it works AND what needs to be done for the future, then we will be in a better position to understand them and offer our support.

Until then, I suggest we invest in this industry in ways to recover what we spend using it's products and support R&D efforts by the industry and others to support our future.PS: If we are clueless other than paying at the pump and express our feelings to those representing us in government; then we have a situation like what exist at this time.My 2 cents ;)

The unfortunate part of all this is Obama and his group to include all the democrats, don’t care about consequences. If they did they wouldn't he trying to force the Health Care, Cap & Tax and all their other stupid plans through.

There is too much special interest influence in Washington now...and the Supreme Court's ruling on campaign financing just made it worse.

The problem with politicians is that they think they know what's good for use regardless of what we tell them.... (i.e. Healthcare).

Some great comments here. Ken2ODs last one is dead on. The consumer pays the tax, no matter how it is disguised. The only possible exception involves bankruptcy -- Who wants to do businiess with somone that can't make money?

They can tax the oil industry all they want. But, remember, all that tax is passed down to the consumer at the pumps. I'm for anything that opens up domestic production and helps to curb OPEC.

Lobbyists can be a source of information for politicians. The problem is that politicians in Washington are always fund raising. With the extent of fund raising that is done to run a campaign, I surprised the politicians are able to pass any laws.

from the article...

Q: Under the Obama administration's 2011 budget proposal, your group estimates there will be nearly $40 billion in tax increases on oil and natural gas production over a 10-year period and predicts a long-term reduction in energy output. Not all the budget is likely to pass, but what is your industry bracing for?
----

Guess who pays all tax increases?

It is not Big Oil. The end user - consumer - pays every penny of tax.

Another BHO blunder. We pay. And pay. And pay...

Also in above, says production is declining. That is bad! The EcoNutz keep us from producing. Crazy stuff.

And pay. And pay. And pay...

How can they harp on the fact that it might cost jobs when they already shutdown some refineries and made employees lose their jobs. This is talk talk talk and yak yak yak at its best. Next industry to be in trouble is the oil industry as they rake in billions and don't really return much. Windfarms, solarpower and electric cars will take their business away, without ruining our environment as much.

Jdbgn term limits don't work. Voting and staying in contact with your representatives does. In Michigan term limits have made a mess of the process. Good guys being term limited. Voting is the way to go. Term limits for the President and a state Governor make sense. But not for representation.

Now back on topic...

We need more the term limits. Term limits to begin with, then limits on their retirement pay and benefits. If they don't behave they get nothing. Most of them are rich anyway. Mostly from graft and other illegal activities.

With the EPA saying Methane is a global warming gas which is the majority of natural gas there seems to be a disconnect!
