U.S. military: Saving energy will save lives

Stars and Stripes-The (Newport News, Va.) Daily Press -- A gasoline-powered generator can supply electricity to a remote U.S. Marine outpost in Afghanistan, powering everything from laptops to communications equipment. And the noise from that generator can be a dead giveaway to Taliban forces searching for Americans.

So when Marines tout the effectiveness of quiet, solar-powered generators, it's not because they feel all warm and fuzzy about Earth Day. They say the equipment makes them safer in a combat zone.

"A lot of our enemies can follow us around by the noise of our generators," said Marine Col. Bob Charette, director of Expeditionary Energy in the Marine Corps.

Honda...My father was in the Navy in WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War....

(Although according to the GOP's 2004 stance, being in the navy in ships off the coast didn't count. But my father also had to go ashore a number of time... so maybe that could meet the new GOP Viet vet definition)....

My grandfather served in WWI and was injured in France.

About 40 years ago... I was afraid to be drafted... and I was.

About 30 years ago, I volunteered...

as for why so many folks hate the military? Probably b/c they are afraid to be drafted if need be and at the same time, they feel ashamed deep inside that they are not out there doing something for the country and the freedom they enjoy. So the easiest way is to bad mouth what they eschew rather than facing their own shortcomings.
It's always easier to point fingers than look at oneself in the mirror an make changes right there.

Some of these posters would have been against the B1 and B2 stealth aircraft... as well as the Navy's stealth style ships...

Good news. Yay!
With stories like this, I can't understand the mantra that the government can't do anything right.
Marines and Navy lead the way in innovation and the Army removes all advertising from Rush Limbaugh's show.
They must all be in cahoots to ruin the nation.
Progressive thought, throughout history, has brought innovation. And resistance too, of course.

From the article:
"America's military preparation, for the present and future, is predicated on innovation," he said.

Use the power of the sun which supplies energy to all living things on earth. Solar energy is a very good thing!
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

In a tactical situations small units, using small generators generally bury them below ground level and sandbag them in to muffle the noise. They are usually turned off at night as the threat situation warrants.

Large base camps leave a large enough footprint that everyone already knows exactly where its at -- especially with unfriendly locals in the area and even unknowingly employed within the camp.

Nothing wrong with using solar, but the threat from the noise is overrated.

I think that it is good to use the solor...but why doen't the government issue the low noise generators so when the clouds roll in, the power doesn't quit...aren't we supposed to have the best equipped military on the ground? Wait a minute didn't they just make deep cuts to the military budget in this last session of congress for more social projects?

Sounds more like a political statement to me. Maybe it's good but I don't think the Noise of Generators is probably the biggest giveaway of a base unit loc. Small forces don't usually use Generators. Where they are using Generators that is likely a small part of their footprint. Like plane landings, vehicle Convoys, Hundreds of troops, Tents or buildings; Food & water supplies replenishment etc etc, Of course maybe times have changed since I retired from Active duty. Maybe now the platoons on manuvers have to have back pack generators for their ipods & personal GPS. Just kidding, I don't really think so!

ps: Not that solar is bad, but remember Solar doesn't work in heavy overcast, heavy smoke, Rain, Night. So you still have to have backup fuel powered Generators or a whole lot of batteries which weigh a bunch.
