With gas prices rising, automakers have healthy supplies of fuel-efficient cars

Cleveland Plain Dealer -- CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If you want a hybrid or any car that gets 40 miles a gallon or more, head to any dealership in town. Odds are, you'll have plenty of choices.

Even with gas prices staying close to $4 a gallon and sales of small cars on the rise, automakers have lots of fuel sippers. At Toyota, for example, Prius hybrids sit on dealership lots for about 35 days before selling.

Four years ago, when gasoline hit $4 per gallon the first time, many dealerships had long waiting lists for the popular Toyota. The average Prius sat on lots for only six days before selling, according to data from consumer research site Edmunds.com.

"Really, four years ago, [fuel economy] wasn't a focus," Edmunds.com analysts Ivan Drury said. "We were still on a trend where people wanted SUVs and large vehicles.

jk: there are LOTS of SAFE cars built by many good car makers that are on European roads, getting excellent fuel efficiency (many diesels), but the US government has not allowed those particular vehicles into the US market as it would have directly thrown the US car makers for a spin into bankruptcy.

With gas prices rising, automakers have healthy supplies of fuel-efficient cars? Well, good for them! With the high price of purchasing a new EV or Inbred, I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, very high MPG, concept or anything else.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

How about if government stops giving tax rebates of $7500 per over-priced Volt's, Leaf's etc...and allow fuel cost to be tax deductible for fuel used to get to and from work...or something like that...oh course limits would be necessary blah blah blah

and big oil just leans back in their big ol' fat cat chair and grins, knowing w/o any interference whatsoever from anyone, they have just doubled the price at the pump in 3 years..

and to think, it took over 100 years for prices to reach $2/gallon, and less than three years for it to double again..

vote early, vote often-probably won't matter, but i will sleep better knowing there is a change in washington..

On the news last night, one guy is selling his small good on fuel auto. Now he walks and rents when he needs a vehicle. He was considering the cost. The way I look at it, is the convenience of the beast.

Ford has in production, a diesel Focus in GB that will get 86 mpg. Why don't they simply bring some of them in to the US? A $15k Focus will beat out a $25K Prius in cost room, and features, and make it the MOST fuel efficient vehicle available, period! These are modern diesels without all the noise and dirty exhaust.

The only reason car makers have an inventory of fuel efficient cars is they were forced to by the government to meet the mileage standards. Giving the choice, I not sure we would have so many fuel efficient cars to choose from.

Purchasing a fuel efficient hybrid vehicle to save on energy costs is long term planning with no large immediate savings. A person won't have immediate savings because, buying a new vehicle for $20,000 affects their expenditures within the immediate future. By the time they notice the savings, years later, there will be new advances in automobile technology and more fuel efficient vehicles.

New car cost too much, especially with the new TPMS, it should be optional.
